We so understand that since trading began thousands of years ago we have imported and exported food and drink. Indeed exports of food and drink add considerably to the Welsh economy. In 2014 the Welsh Government set a target of reaching £7.0 billion in exports of Welsh Food and Drink by April 2020 which was more than exceeded and the whole industry needs to be congratulated on this. This figure is even better when you consider that Food and Drink sold at markets and Festivals to the many tourists cannot be included in this figure.
Indeed thinking of traditional Welsh products, many cannot be made without the use of imported foods such as Bara Brith or even Welsh Cakes never forgetting our staple drinks of tea and coffee. So a broad broad brushstroke would be unfair but 25% of the 2020 Welsh Great Taste Winners are substantially made from imported ingredients.
