The Mallow Tailor was established in March 2019, fundamentally as an online business and is owned and run by Kate & Janet Coton Wright and creates uniquely designed handmade chocolates and marshmallows.
The duo love what Wales has to offer food wise and use the finest ingredients they can source such as Red Dragon double cream and butter as well as Halen Môn Sea Salt, and even source loose tea from Brecon which infuses flavour into their French style marshmallows.
“Cywain have been great on so many levels. Neither Janet or I knew anything about owning and running a food business, so with their help, we developed a business plan, outlined our next steps and identified our known unknowns” said Kate.
Kate and Janet spent months developing many recipes and products and eventually came up with their hand decorated filled chocolates, using their own marshmallow and salted caramel recipes. Since then, they have extended their range to include ganache chocolates, infused marshmallow and filled slabs.
Cywain was able to assist Kate following her request for help with packaging the new product line and as a result they now have their ‘Slabolates’ packaged and on the market.
They continue to innovate and have recently launched their ‘Create your own Chocolate Bars’ kit, tapping into the increased demand for at-home experiences seen during the recent lockdown restrictions.
In terms of distribution during the COVID-19 pandemic, the company has been able to continue business as usual, mainly due to the fact that they are home based and function predominantly online.
This period has not been without its challenges, mainly in relation to the supply chain. A number of suppliers they work with have been affected so they have had to either use alternative suppliers, source alternative products or accept delays in lead times.
The Mallow Tailor offer masterclasses which have proven popular among chocolate lovers and corporate clients. Restaurants and hotels also use their services – but for now, have all been put on hold.
“Despite these difficult times, we remain very positive and are continuing to grow our business by doing things differently in this new ‘norm’. Our financial and time investments are focused on our online business and working with other companies that align well with our business” said Janet.
Kate benefited from Cywain’s An Introduction to Selling through Amazon workshop recently, which gave an overview of how to sell on the platform and offered advice on getting started, along with tips on how to be found by customers.
“It was great, very informative and gave some really good advice which I’ve been working on” said Kate.
She adds,
“The workshops are highly informative and very well delivered and organised with the added bonus of networking with other business owners.”
The Mallow Tailor products will shortly be available to buy on the online platform Not on the High Street and Kate and Janet have been working more closely with local retailers and resellers of high-quality food and drink products and are facing the future with confidence.
