Born in Bali, Made in Wales!

BaaBaa Rum is a new product from a family business born in lockdown. James Merriman from Penarth and his brother-in-law Ben Walker have used the lockdown to develop a fresh and exciting new spin on spiced Rum. As James Merriman explains, their story starts in the tropical paradise of Bali:

“Whilst sitting back and taking in the truly breath-taking scenery we had an idea, to combine the flavours of paradise with our favourite drink – spiced rum! It made sense to us to combine our passions – and it worked! Lockdown gave us the opportunity to work on our idea.”

BaaBaa botanically infused Rum is delicately hand crafted and twice distilled using molasses as its base, then finished with a dash of rum from Mauritius and the Reunion Islands to add to its depth. It’s then blended with the finest natural botanicals sourced both locally and from all around the world and mixed with the purest of Welsh water all combined to perfection in the very heart of Wales.

“Our rum is unique because it is bursting with floral notes and flavours including Hibiscus and Lotus root. It can be enjoyed neat over ice, with a premium tonic or lemonade or in a multitude of cocktails. We are bringing vibrant colours, signature smoothness and the tropical flavours of paradise with every glass. And we hope all of this is reflected in our beautiful branding, Bali and Wales intertwined on the bottle.” explains James.
Their mission was to bring a new and exciting take on Rum to the world with innovative and exciting unique drinks for all to enjoy. The first release from BaaBaa Rum boasts floral infusions of Hibiscus and Lotus root, the delicately hand crafted botanically infused rum is bursting with flavour and its beautiful pink colour is all natural.”

BaaBaa Rum have received Cywain support to help with branding, and guidance in setting up a new website and shop so you can buy direct online. Cywain, a Menter a Busnes project that supports the development of growth-orientated businesses in the food and drink sector in Wales, also helped with advice on alcohol duty and provided general mentoring expertise.

“It’s great to see dreams becoming reality, whilst lockdown for some proved challenging, for others it was a perfect opportunity to trial ideas and develop new products and businesses. We look forward to seeing the business grow.” Explains Nia Môn, Cywain Development Manager.
